On February 1, 2022, Mayor Pierre Guénard and the Municipal Council of Chelsea voted unanimously to approve the name,   “Nakweyamàdiwin Mikàns,” as the official name for the community trail that passes across the south lawn of St Mary Magdalene  church and links Quartier Meredith with Route 105.

On July 18, 2021 Bishop Shane Parker and Albert Dumont, Algonquin Elder from Kitigan Zibi and Indigenous Advisor to the Bishop, blessed the trail that was under construction at the time.  Following the blessing of the trail, Elder Dumont proposed the Algonquin Anishinabeg  name, “Nakweyamàdiwin Mikàns” as an act of reconciliation.

The name means “friendship trail/ sentier de l’amitié”.

Albert Dumont recorded a video posted on YouTube to teach us the Algonquin Anishinabeg pronunciation of the name. You can watch the video at:

On the SMM website the reference to Albert Dumont’s YouTube video can be found at http://smmchelsea.com/outreach/

The Municipality will erect a sign and sign post with the official name at a date yet to be determined
